Newborn Hat with Lace Design, Free Crochet Pattern

Here is a tiny hat for a newborn angel! 

It's simple and quick to make. It takes a very small amount of yarn.

And it looks absolutely darling!

This pattern is written using the US crochet terminology.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Size: Newborn

Finished Measurements: about 11 inches in circumference, 5 inches in height  

Materials:

US hook size F/5 (3.75 mm) 

Baby sport 100% acrylic yarn, about 50 yards (I used Beehive Baby Sport by Patons)

Gauge: first 4 rounds = 3.5 inches

Abbreviations:

ch chain

sc single crochet

sl st slip stich

dc double crochet

hdc half double crochet

dc2-tog: two double crochets finished together

dc3-tog: three double crochets finished together

* * instructions between asterisks should be repeated as many times as there are stitches to accommodate them or as many times as stated.

Magic ring.

Round 1: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 11 dc in ring; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (12 dc)

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in each dc around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (24 dc)

Round 3: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in same st as joining, dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc* around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (36 dc)

Round 4: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in same st as joining, dc in next 2 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc* around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (48 dc)

 

Round 5: ch 1, sc in same st as joining, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) all in next dc, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, *sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) all in next dc, ch 2, skip next 2 dc* around; join with sl st to 1st sc. 

Round 6: sl st to ch-2 space between next 2 dc, ch 2, dc2-tog in same ch-2 space (counts as 1st dc3-tog), (ch 2, dc3-tog, ch 2, dc3-tog) all in same ch-2 space, *ch 1, (dc3-tog, ch 2, dc3-tog, ch 2, dc3-tog) all in ch-2 space between next 2 dc* around; join with hdc to top of beginning dc3-tog (this brings yarn and hook in position for the next round). 

Round 7: ch 4 (counts as 1st dc and ch 1), {dc in next ch-2 space, ch 1} twice, *dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, {dc in next ch-2 space, ch 1} twice* around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. 

Round 8: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in next ch, *dc in next dc, dc in next ch* around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. 

Rounds 9-12 : repeat Rounds 5-8.

Fasten off.
