Pink Sunset Mandala, Simple Crochet Pattern

This is a very basic pattern for a small mandala. You can use more colors of your choice, and make it as a decorative piece, or use it as a dishcloth.

Skill Level: Beginner

Finished Measurements: about 8.5 inches across

Materials:

US hook size D/3 (3.25 mm) 

Patons Grace yarn (100% mercerized cotton), about 90 yards

Gauge: not important

Abbreviations:

ch chain

sc single crochet

sl st slip stich

dc double crochet

dc2-tog two double crochets finished together

FPdc front post double crochet

* * instructions between asterisks should be repeated as many times as there are stitches to accommodate them.

Ch 5, join with sl st in ring. 

Round 1: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 11 dc in ring; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (12 dc)

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), FPdc around ch-3 of previous round, *dc in next dc and FPdc around same dc* around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (12 dc, 12 FPdc)

Change color.

Round 3: ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st sc. (24 sc)

Round 4: ch 1, sc in same st as joining, ch 3, skip next sc, *sc in next sc, ch 3, skip next sc* around; join with sl st to 1st sc. (12 ch-3 loops)

Change color.

Round 5: sl st in next ch-3 loop, ch 2, dc in same ch-loop (counts as 1st dc2-tog), ch 2, dc2-tog in same ch-loop, ch 2, *(dc2-tog, ch 2, dc2-tog) all in next ch-3 loop, ch 2* around; join with sl st to top of 1st dc2-tog. 

Change color.

Round 6: sl st in next ch-2 space, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 space, ch 3, *sc in next ch-2 space, ch 3* around; join with sl st to 1st sc. (24 ch-3 loops)

Round 7: sl st in next ch-3 space, ch 1, 4 sc in same ch-3 space, *4 sc in next ch-3 space* around; join with sl st to 1st sc. (96 sc)

Change color.

Round 8: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in each sc around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (96 dc)

Round 9: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), FPdc around next dc, *dc in next dc, FPdc around next dc* around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (48 dc, 48 FPdc)

Change color. 

Round 10: ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each dc and FPdc around; join with sl st to 1st sc. (96 sc)

Round 11: ch 1, sc in same st as joining, ch 3, skip next 2 sc, *sc in next sc, ch 3, skip next 2 sc* around; join with sl st to 1st sc. (32 ch-3 loops)

Change color.

Round 12: sl st in next ch-3 loop, ch 2, dc in same ch-loop (counts as 1st dc2-tog), ch 2, dc2-tog in same ch-loop, ch 2, *(dc2-tog, ch 2, dc2-tog) all in next ch-3 loop, ch 2* around; join with sl st to top of 1st dc2-tog.

Change color.

Round 13: sl st in next ch-2 space, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 space, ch 3, *sc in next ch-2 space, ch 3* around; join with sl st to 1st sc. (64 ch-3 loops)

Round 14: sl st in next ch-3 space, ch 1, sc in same ch-3 space, *2 sc in next ch-3 space* around; join with sl st to 1st sc. (128 sc)

Fasten off.
